How is the 2021 Equestrian Season Different than 2020?
Last March, when the Coronavirus lock-down began in Florida, the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, Florida came to a quick halt. Hundreds of competitors found their shows cancelled and the Equestrian Season abruptly ended. They left Wellington amid fears of mask, toilet paper, and disinfectant shortages and with mass confusion over what the next several months would bring.
Well, fortunately, WEF 2021 is proceeding this year and Wellington has welcomed back hundreds of riders—this time socially distanced and wearing masks—but all thrilled to compete together again. The showgrounds will not mirror that of years past—no carrousel, no petting zoo, and few spectators—but the accomplished dressage, hunters and jumpers, and polo players will still shine doing what they love most. In fact, to make up for last year’s cancellations, WEF will last an extra week, from January 6-April 4, 2021.
As the largest show jumping circuit in the world, Wellington holds a special place in the heart of equestrians. Not only do they escape to sunny Florida each Winter, but they have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and continue their trainings surrounded by the most accomplished riders from around the world. The equine “vibe” is palpable while traveling on the dusty dirt roads of deep Wellington—where horses have the right of way and everyone knows that “Season” means an influx of prestigious riders.
From an outside observer, the 2021 Palm Beach Equestrian Center might appear different than previously--with COVID protocols actively observed. Still, adhering to these safety precautions will not negate the excitement, enthusiasm, and dedication that makes WEF the premier horse show year after year. The ubiquitous breeches and horse trailers remind local residents that, if you love horses, Wellington remains the beloved backdrop it’s always been for the Winter Equestrian Season.
